Shooting rumors prompted Emmaus High School closure; weekend sports moved

The high school is expected to resume classes Monday with an “enhanced police presence.”

Rumors and an ongoing investigation spurred officials to close Emmaus High School on Friday, a day after the school was locked down when a box of 50 .22-caliber bullets was spilled in a hallway.

The district originally had planned to resume its normal schedule Friday, but police found new leads Thursday night and needed to interview more students, East Penn Schools Superintendent Michael Schilder said in an email Friday.

“In addition, many rumors were circulating in the community, including one regarding a potential shooting at EHS on Friday,” Schilder said. “While the rumors were unsubstantiated, the decision was made to cancel school and all evening activities at EHS on Friday as a precautionary measure.”

All home sporting events on Saturday have been moved to the Whitehall-Coplay School District so police can continue the investigation and dispel rumors, the email said.

The school was locked down Thursday after the bullets were found. The building was searched and students were interviewed during the day, with no other contraband found or arrests made, Schilder said in the email.

Rumors that the bullets were connected with a student’s alleged threat last week were unfounded — that student had been removed from the school, the district said.

Late Thursday, police told the district of new leads, Schilder said. The investigation is continuing and no arrests had been made as of Friday afternoon, he said.

“Our decisions, in conjunction with local and county law enforcement, will be based on the most credible information available with the primary goal of establishing a safe school environment,” the superintendent said in his email. “Thank you for your patience, understanding, and trust.”
